YOUR DIFFERENCE MAKER…at the age of 15, Rick Hansen of British Columbia was in an automobile accident that paralyzed him from the waist down for life. Confined to a wheelchair, some years later Rick became famous as the "Man in Motion". His notoriety began when he decided to circle the globe in his wheel chair to raise funds for paraplegics. Incredibly, from March 1985 to May 1987 Rick covered more than 40,000 km in four continents doing just that… he "circled the globe". The #1 hit theme song from the film "St. Elmo's fire" was written by David Foster in honor of Rick's achievement. Rick continues to be both a celebrity and a powerful advocate of his cause at the age of 54.
Rick Hansen shares that he was inspired by a man he calls my "Difference Maker". He says he was encouraged, prodded, hugged and pushed by a famous coach also from British Columbia by the name of Tim Frick. Mr. Frick is an expert in getting the most out of other individuals. He coaches many wheelchair athletes at the international level. He is definitely a Difference Maker. Every successful Salesperson has a Difference Maker in their life. Who is your Difference Maker?
Here is your ACTION STEP… let's begin by accepting the fact that to be successful in Sales you can't do it on your own. There is no award for "doing it on your own". When evaluating the best Salespeople in your industry, no one ever asks… "Yeah but, did he/she'd do it on their own?". The other issue that makes a lot of sense is that you don't have to settle for one individual Difference Maker. You can have several. Here's some ideas:
DIFFERENT MAKER SOURCES
1. A particular author or speaker who inspires you (Napoleon Hill, Jack Canfield, Tony Robbins, etc.)
2. A business celebrity who inspires you (Jack Welch, Donald Trump, Steve Jobs)
3. A sports celebrity who inspires you (John Wooden, Steve Belichick, Michael Phelps)
4. Inspirational people from history (Mother Teresa, Ghandi, the Dalai Lama)
5. Someone local who you admire
When you look at this list, it becomes obvious that you may want to have a variety of Difference Makers in your life. Each one can help you with the different aspects of your career… personal, professional, financial, health, spirituality, etc. An example would be that Steve Jobs might inspire you in your business but not necessarily in your personal life. Mother Teresa might impact you in your personal life but not in your financial life. Regardless, it is extremely powerful to have one or more Difference Makers that you study, listen to, read about, and learn a tremendous amount from. Rick Hansen made it very clear that there is no way he would have traveled around the world without the mentorship of Tim Frick. Take your Sales Business to a whole new level… identify your Difference Maker today and grow from the relationship. NO Excuses.
