Would you like to know the number one sales insight? One my Coaching Clients who does a lot of doorknocking shared a great story with me. David door knocks all the time and deals with the usual rejection every day. It’s part of what happens in the job, right?
Recently, the team that Dave is on did something very unique. They did a food drive in one of the neighbourhoods where they dominate the market. They went door to door and handed out a bag to put food in. Attached was a covering letter and a business card. They didn’t talk at all about selling their house. It was just food drive. Okay?
So here’s what David discovered. The food drive was very successful. They collected almost a ton of food. But here’s what David told me. He said, “You know what, Bruce?” He said, “When I’m door knocking regularly and doing just-listed, just-solds in the neighborhood,” he said, “There’s always a few grumpy people. There’s people that slam doors, some people won’t come to the door, all kinds of weird things.”
He said, “For the longest time that kind of bothered me.” Then he said, “I went and did the food drive.” And he was walking around handing out these bags. Right? Well, guess what happened? Exactly the same thing.
David realized this, “You know what? It was the same thing – people slamming doors, ‘I’m not giving food to anybody, not coming to the door.”
So the number one sales insight is this…It isn’t just because you’re out there knocking on doors asking for business that people are grumpy. Some people are downright grumpy, no matter what.
There’s going to be rejection, and there’s going to be people that you’re going to think, “Thank goodness I didn’t have to talk to them very long. NEXT”.
The number one sales insight, people are going to be grumpy. Some of them are, some of them aren’t. Don’t take it personally. Keep going. Keep moving forward. You’re winning. NO Excuses.
Question…what’s your favourite technique for dealing with rejection? What do you do to get over it fast?
