OVERWHELM IS A KILLER… The Business of Sales has a tremendous amount of appeal because of the leverage it provides for our time and our income. Many people get into the Sales Game because of the freedom it allows in their day-to-day activities. The thought of not having a 9 to 5 day is very appealing (except on occasion you may work three nights in a row). The second “carrot” for being in Sales is the fact that you can earn as much money as you want… assuming you convince enough people to buy from you. Of course there are always two sides to the story and sometimes we get OVERWHELMED. We work too hard and nothing seems to go right… the pressure builds up and we feel like we are ready to explode! In a recent episode of the Emmy winning show, “MAD MEN – Season #4”, overwhelm overtook main character Don Draper. Another character offered an excellent and very wise solution…
Here is your ACTION STEP…the advice Don got went like this… “When I am out of sorts, I always look at the calendar – there is usually something significant in there”. Great Advice! One of the best antidotes for Overwhelm is a reminder of two things:
1. Why am I doing this work?
2. What do I have to look forward to?
Take this approach:
1. Put a big calendar on the wall. Preferably a “Year at a Glance” model. (See my YouTube video entitled “Time Management Board“)
2. Schedule and mark down some exciting things in your future (trips, vacations, activities, etc.)
3. Focus on looking forward to the things you are going to do
Don’t let Overwhelm be front and center… you deserve better! Look at it this way… sometimes the price seems fairly high. At the same time here’s a great question to ask yourself… “What’s the alternative?”. Usually the alternative is less appealing than all the exciting things you have planned for your future. Work on your skills, stay focused, and remind yourself of why you are doing the things you are doing. Keep your rewards highly visible! It’s usually worth it! NO Excuses.
