LET YOUR COMPASS TAKE OVER… it used to be if you wanted to go somewhere you pulled out a map, spread it out on the kitchen table, and figured out the best route for your travels. That has been replaced with MapQuest and your GPS. If you look at things from an even broader perspective, meaning business and even life… the concept of a “map” has really been replaced by the concept of a “compass”. Traditional methods of getting there have fallen by the wayside. Every time someone tells you “how things are done” a new and better idea comes along. Look what has happened to print media (Google), look what has happened to television (TiVo),look what has happened to food and nutrition (organic is much better and safer). How does this apply to the Sales Business? Consider the metaphor of the map versus the compass. The map shows a specific way to get there pointing out all the twists and turns that are necessary. The compass provides a direct route to a specific destination. The value of the “compass approach” is that it offers a more direct route. It focuses primarily on “where you want to end up”.
Here is your ACTION STEP… let’s assume that from now on you are going to use a compass in your Sales Business to help you “get there”. Using that premise it then becomes critical to have a clear vision as to what “THERE” actually looks like! Here’s some suggestions on how to make sure that your compass is set for the right destination. It is a six step process:
Step #1. Start by making sure you know what your Personal Goals are. Are you 100% crystal clear on what you want for yourself?
Step #2. Create Annual Business Targets that will allow you to achieve/purchase/experience all the items in Step #1.
Step #3. Break these Annual Targets down into “bite-size chunks”. Make your targets monthly or even weekly to help them be more attainable.
Step #4. Identify the Action Steps necessary to be completed on a daily basis to make all this happen. Be very clear on all the “pieces to the puzzle” that must be done every day.
Step #5. Set up a schedule to make this happen. Add some structure to the process.
Step #6. Get up every day and follow your schedule… the key is to build a Rock Solid Routine. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.
The key is to always be focused on the end result. Where do you want to go? What does success look like? Are you clear as to what you want to accomplish? Use your compass to keep you on track, keep checking to ensure that you are always heading in the right direction. Track your results and stay on path. Don’t let distractions, temptations, and other “shiny pennies” throw you off course. The best Salespeople are laser focused on where they are going. Set your compass for success today! NO Excuses.
