DEALING WITH STRESS… the problem with life is that it is not predictable. Often times what you expect to happen does not happen. The Sales Business mirrors this scenario. Possibly the toughest part about Selling is dealing with the adversity, the stress, the disappointment, and the fluctuations in results and income. Here is a great quote from highly successful Businessman and Author, Lee Iacocca…
“In times of great stress or adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something positive”.
This is pretty good advice. You may as well follow it…the alternative really doesn’t get you very far does it?
Here is your ACTION STEP… as Mr. Iacocca says, when stress or adversity (or disappointment or anger or resentment or resistance to change, etc., etc., etc.) appear on the horizon the best thing to do is immerse yourself in good solid work habits. This is where “getting back to the basics” is the best antidote of all. Here’s some great “basics” for you:
1. Get up early in the morning even when you don’t feel like it
2. Exercise daily to burn off any negative energy that exists
3. Start work on time… get busy (this will do wonders to help block out those negative thoughts as soon as possible). The fact that we can only handle one thought at a time really helps here!
4. Here’s the best part… get out in the business community and make some personal visits…do what you do best! Go and see some of your best customers or even door knock. “Meet the People”… I guarantee that you will feel dramatically better and your confidence will restore itself much quicker.
When things get off track in your life, when things get off track in your Sales Business…GET BUSY. Let’s face it, eventually you will have to decide how soon you are going to get back to normal. It isn’t like things are going to be askew for the rest of your life. Have faith in this statement… “Things will work out, they always do”. The key is to help “things work out” sooner versus later. You are in charge of that. It’s okay to get upset when things go wrong… just don’t allow yourself to take much time to dwell on it. NO Excuses.
