I came across a fascinating article recently in the November issue of REM Magazine. It was an interview with the broker of record for Better Homes and Gardens Prairie View Realty in Regina. His name is Matt Dominguez.
Matt Dominguez is distinct because of two things: (a) he runs a very successful brokerage in Regina, and (b) he was an extremely successful football player for the Saskatchewan Roughriders for many, many years. They asked Matt a very interesting question in the article, and I want to read his answer to you. Basically, what they asked him was, “Do you see any connections between being a professional athlete and being a professional salesperson?”
Here’s what Matt had to say. He said, “In order to be successful in professional sports, you have to be disciplined, compassionate, consistent, self-motivated.” Then Matt went on to say, “And have the ability to shake off the bad stuff and go forward.”
He was saying, “Keep your eye on what’s important.” And then he wrapped up his answer by saying, “Interestingly enough, these skills mirror the skills that every successful realtor must have.”
So think about his wisdom. Being mentally tough and dealing with the adversities that we go all through our business…dealing with the rejection, the disappointments, the ups and downs, all those things …well that’s part of what happened in Matt Dominguez’s real estate career and what happened earlier in his football career. As he says, they’re all the same.
So, here’s what I’m asking you to think about. Do what Matt says. Focus on the important, focus on your goals. Don’t let the little things get in the way, and when you do get knocked down, get right back up. As Matt says, that’s the connection between athletic success and business success and sales.
Thank you Matt. Great message.
CONCLUSION: Two Questions for you…1. What’s important to you? & 2. What can you do to focus on it today?
