THE “ME FILE”…one of the things that most Salespeople are really good at is… beating themselves up a regular basis! For some reason there is a perception that “If I consistently criticize myself I will get better“. When you see it written down like that it sure sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it!!? The truth is everybody does it. There is definitely an element of self-sabotage built into beating yourself up. Everybody spends a lot more time criticizing themselves and complaining about what they should have/would have/could have done rather than simply patting themselves on the back periodically. Let’s not spend any more time thinking about WHY, let’s look at an alternative approach. Business consultant and self-help guru Bob Proctor suggests a much more positive avenue. Bob says that all Salespeople should start a “Me File”.
Here is your ACTION STEP… the “Me File” is designed to store all the good things that come your way for future reference. This is a great alternative to beating yourself up. Here is what will go in your file:
1. Recommendation and testimonial letters from satisfied customers.
2. Personal notes/cards from friends and relatives.
3. Notification of various awards and accomplishments you have achieved.
4. Critical Point: start including short notes to yourself of things that went particularly well, things you did that you’re proud of. Your wins…small ones and big ones.
5. Photographs of good memories and happy times.
Bonus Point: you could also start a “Success Journal”. Every night before you go to bed write three things that went well that day. Go to sleep with a smile on your face, it’s better than the alternative!
When to use the “Me File”? Every time you need a boost, every time you are on the verge of “beating yourself up” open and review the file. Start creating some Positive Media about yourself that you can reflect on in an instant. We are surrounded by negativity from people and the media. The “Me File” is your antidote. Open it up at least once a week. Take extra doses when needed, sometimes it will be more necessary than others. Never lose sight of the fact that your Me File always tells the truth. It knows you better than you do. Make “I am a great Salesperson” your favorite affirmation. NO Excuses.
