YOU NEVER KNOW… the Scout Movement was founded by Lord Baden-Powell over 100 years ago. The Scout motto simply said… “Be Prepared”. This motto was based around the need to be ready for whatever comes up in your life. The wisdom in doing so still holds true today. You never know when you are going to have one of those AHA Moments. One of those gifts that comes along periodically that can change your life! You just have to “Be Prepared”.
I had one such AHA Moment on a recent trip to Sicily. During dinner one evening a middle-aged British couple sat next to us. They were accompanied by a very elderly gentleman named Eddie. He brought two things into the restaurant with him… a wheelchair and a sparkle in his eye. Eddie is 89 years old, still full of energy, with a beautiful attitude towards living. We got chatting and Eddie shared his fascinating story…
“My son and his wife have brought me back to Sicily to see what I missed when I was here at age 20. I came as a communications officer in the British Navy during the Second World War in 1943. The war was a terrible time but I was so young I probably didn’t understand the enormity of it all. Two of the ships I was on were sunk but I survived. We landed troops in Italy near Naples and eventually ended up in Palermo, Sicily. I’m proud to say I was awarded a medal for my contribution to the Navy. When World War II was over I went back home to London, England and started my adult life. I got married and had a daughter and son. I was married for 64 years and lost my wife last year. Last year I moved from London to Dover to be near my daughter. I’m pretty healthy, and I have “lots of miles left in me”. My life has been pretty good overall but I’m not done yet!” (He ended that part with a big smile and a wink and proceeded to take a sip from his glass of wine)
Eddie is one of those amazing individuals we meet every once in a while who helps us put things in perspective so beautifully. Nothing pretentious, what you see is what you get. The message I received was very clear… “Don’t sweat the small stuff”. There are lots of big things going on but most of the items that create stress and anxiety on a daily basis are not all that important! A lot of the pressures of the Sales Business are small stuff. Most of them won’t be that significant even 24 hours from now. I wonder what Eddie would say about some of the things we fuss with?
Two final thoughts on AHA Moments… first, “Be Prepared”. They are everywhere around us. Secondly, enjoy the lesson they offer. There is always something amazing waiting for us to learn right before our very eyes. You never know when the next opportunity will present itself. Thank you Eddie. NO Excuses.
