OLYMPIC POWER…the modern Olympic Games represents everything good in life. The five rings make that pretty clear… they represent the five parts of the world inviting everyone to participate (the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania). The motto… "Faster, Higher, Stronger" refers to the competitiveness of the two-week gala. The first "modern games" was held over 100 years ago in Athens, Greece in 1896. This amazing festival was the brainchild of Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin.
Thank you Pierre… you have given us a marvelous gift!
When we watch the competitions, when we watch the proceedings… it is inspiration at its best. We see the young faces full of hope, commitment, excellence, dedication, work ethic, and above all else… incredible focus. If you've ever had a chance to spend time with a former Olympian they will always say with pride… "I am not a former Olympian. I am an Olympian. Once an Olympian, always an Olympian". The other thing that is so striking about athletes performing at this level is understanding the price they paid in getting ready to compete. In reality, we probably can't understand what it took to get there. What we can understand is that it did require a lot of sacrifice at the highest level.
So what can we learn from the Olympics? What can we take away from watching these amazing athletes who have given up so much to be on the world's stage?
Here is your ACTION STEP…three observations for Salespeople so you can take advantage of the Olympics…
1. The media coverage for the Olympics is incredible. Every television channel is offering dozens of hours of programming. What's noticeable is that the tone of all news has gone from negative to positive! Normal news coverage is negative. Positive is much more uplifting than negative… why not commit to stop watching regular newscasts from now on?
2. There is obviously something very special about an individual who prepares most of their life to perform in the Olympics. They send us a very clear message. One of the common denominators is they follow a rock-solid routine. Olympic athletes start by creating powerful habits that ensure top performance and constant growth. The best Salespeople develop powerful habits and follow a routine. Shore up your routine… make it stronger.
3. Lastly, every Olympic athlete talks about The "Power of Mindset". In separate interviews recently both US swimmer Ryan Lochte and Canadian cyclist Clara Hughes talked about Mindset. They both said… "By the time we get to my event, it is 95% mindset and 5% doing what I do best". The Sales Business is no different… you must feed your mind every day with powerful thoughts and affirmations to perform at your highest level.
When it's all over, when the Olympic flame has been extinguished, will you go back to the way you were? Will you start watching the news again? Will you revert back to the same old habits? Will you forget to feed your mindset extra nourishment every day? Resolve today to take advantage of the lessons to be gained from Olympic Power. Today's technology allows us to "be there" in a more real way than ever before…the lessons are everywhere. Use Olympic Power to your benefit. Make sure that you are "faster, higher, stronger" too! NO Excuses.
