ADDICTED TO APPROVAL… people do strange things. People do things that from the outside appear extremely irrational. Sometimes they even make fools of themselves. A typical example are those people that are Addicted to Approval. They do things that if given a second chance would certainly not be repeated. The tabloids are full of examples of celebrities who fall into this trap… people like Charlie Sheen, Sarah Ferguson, Lindsay Lohan, etc. come to mind. Everyone wants to be accepted, everyone wants to be liked. There are those who go overboard. It shows up as an addiction to approval. Some Salespeople fall into this trap. Looking for a YES at any cost…often at the expense of losing self-respect (and/or the respect of others).
Here is your ACTION STEP…a Salesperson’s job is to seek and gain approval. The danger comes when you make irrational decisions in order to get that approval. Here are some examples of making irrational decisions while looking for approval:
1. Cutting your commission
2. Not closing 5 to 7 times
3. Not following up in a timely fashion
4. Avoiding asking for referrals
Usually your justification will show up in statements like, “I don’t like to be pushy” or “I don’t want to chase them away”. How to deal with this? Great Salespeople deal with these limiting beliefs by staying focused on their Priorities. Your priorities should always be to:
1. Help those who need you.
2. Move past those who don’t need you (keep checking on their motivation)
3. Don’t forget to focus on your motivation too…what are you trying to achieve? What is your overall goal?
Like many things in your business, it sounds simple enough but it isn’t. This takes practice, discipline, support, and accountability. Make sure these 4 items are part of who you are and who you are becoming. If you’re looking for approval… it’s OK, that’s part of selling. Here’s how you draw the line — focus first on getting the approval of those in your Personal life by being successful in your Business life. One begets the other. Don’t forget, your motivation counts too! NO Excuses.
